Volcanoes National Park

In the cool mist of northern Rwanda, a gorilla family moves gracefully through the dense bamboo forest, their curious eyes peeking from behind lush greenery.

This is Volcanoes National Park, a haven for extraordinary wildlife and vibrant ecosystems. Covering 160 square kilometres, it is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Famed for its mountain gorillas, the park owes much of its recognition to Dian Fossey’s dedicated conservation work. Beyond gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is home to golden monkeys, forest elephants, and a remarkable variety of birds. Its dramatic landscape includes five towering volcanoes—Bisoke, Karisimbi, Gahinga, Sabyinyo, and Muhabura—wrapped in dense forests and alpine vegetation.

With its rich biodiversity and awe-inspiring scenery, Volcanoes National Park is a destination where visitors can connect deeply with nature and witness the resilience of Rwanda’s treasured wildlife.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to explore Volcanoes National Park is during the dry seasons, from June to August and December to February. These months are ideal for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and hiking, as the trails are less slippery and the weather is generally more pleasant.

While the park is open year-round, the rainy seasons, from March to May and October to November, bring lush greenery and are perfect for birdwatchers and nature photographers seeking vibrant landscapes.
