Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve, located in northern Kenya, is a semi-arid wildlife sanctuary known for its diverse ecosystems and unique wildlife. Covering 165 square kilometres, it lies along the Ewaso Ng’iro River, the region’s primary water source, sustaining a variety of animals and lush riverine vegetation.

The reserve is home to the Samburu Special Five—Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, and gerenuk—species adapted to the dry landscape and rarely found in other parks. Large herds of elephants are common, and predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs roam freely. With over 450 bird species, it is also a paradise for birdwatchers.

Beyond wildlife, Samburu offers cultural experiences, allowing visitors to interact with the Samburu people, a semi-nomadic community known for their rich traditions. Unlike the crowded southern parks, Samburu provides a more exclusive Kenya Safari Experience, with fewer vehicles and stunning landscapes that make every wildlife sighting feel special.

The Best Time to Visit

Samburu National Reserve is a year-round destination, but the best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry seasons (June to October and December to March). The dry months make it easier to spot animals as they gather near the Ewaso Ng’iro River, the main water source.

The wet seasons (April-May and November) bring lush landscapes, but some roads may become challenging to navigate. Bird lovers will enjoy the green season, as migratory birds arrive. The cooler months (July to September) offer comfortable game drives, while hotter months (January to March) provide excellent predator activity.
