Masai Mara National Reserve
In the heart of Africa lies a land where lions roar across golden plains and herds of wildebeests thunder in search of greener pastures. Welcome to the Masai Mara National Reserve, a breathtaking wilderness in southwestern Kenya. Covering 1,510 square kilometres, this reserve is part of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem and shares its southern border with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park.
The Masai Mara is world famous for its abundant wildlife, including the “Big Five”—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. It’s also the stage for the Great Wildebeest Migration, a mesmerizing spectacle of over two million animals on the move. The name “Mara,” meaning “spotted” in the Maasai language, reflects the dotted acacia trees and bushy landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Beyond the wildlife, the Masai Mara invites you to connect with the proud Maasai people, their culture, and traditions, adding a unique human element to your journey. From game drives and balloon safaris to peaceful bush meals under the stars, this is where adventure meets wonder.
The Best Time to Visit
The Masai Mara National Reserve is a place you can visit all year, but the dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife spotting. Animals gather near rivers and waterholes, and the grass is shorter, making it easier to see them. This is also when the famous Great Wildebeest Migration happens, with dramatic river crossings between August and October.
If you prefer lush greenery and quieter trails, visit in the rainy season from March to May or the short rains in November and December. While road conditions might be tricky, the scenery is stunning, and birdwatching is at its best.
