Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its untamed rainforest, rich biodiversity and mountain gorillas. Covering 331 square kilometres, this ancient forest rises over steep ridges and deep valleys, making it one of the most ecologically diverse areas in Africa.
The name “Bwindi” originates from the Runyakitara phrase “Mubwindi bwa Nyinamuraki,” meaning “a place of darkness.” It was named after Mubwindi Swamp, an area so dense that early travellers found it difficult to cross. The forest is renowned for housing nearly half of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas, making it a prime location for gorilla trekking.
Beyond gorillas, Bwindi is home to 120 mammal species, 10 primate species, including chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, De Brazza, red-tailed, and blue monkeys and over 348 bird species. Out of its 4 regions, the Buhoma and Nkuringo sectors are the best trekking regions, offering diverse trails, cultural experiences, and stunning views.
Best Time to Visit
Bwindi is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons: June to August and December to February. During these months, the trails are drier and easier to navigate, offering better conditions for gorilla trekking. The chance of rain interfering with your experience is lower, and photography becomes easier in clearer weather.
For birdwatchers, the wet seasons from March to May and September to November are ideal, as the forest is lush, and local birds are more active during their breeding season. However, be prepared for muddy trails and higher chances of rainfall.
