Tsavo East & West National Parks

At 22,000 square kilometres, Tsavo National Park is the biggest and oldest national park in Kenya. It is separated into two halves, Tsavo East and Tsavo West, by the former railway line that ran between Nairobi and Mombasa. Notable for its many ecosystems, abundant species, and expansive wilderness, this area is known for its breathtaking scenery.

Open savannahs, the world’s longest lava flow—the Yatta Plateau—and the Galana River make Tsavo East famous. Wildflowers, thick forests, and volcanic formations such as the Shetani Lava Flow and Mzima Springs are all part of Tsavo West. The springs’ pristine waters provide a haven for crocodiles and hippos.
The park is inhabited by a variety of wildlife, including the infamous “man-eating lions” from Tsavo, red-dusted elephant herds, and the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and elephant.

Tsavo provides an unparalleled combination of excitement and tranquillity with its more than 500 bird species, stunning waterfalls, and cultural interactions with the Maasai people.

The Best Time to Visit

The best time to explore Tsavo National Park is during the dry seasons of June to October and January to February. During these months, animals congregate around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot. The dry weather also ensures smoother game drives and clear skies for photography.

While the rainy seasons (April, May, and November) bring lush green landscapes, wildlife tends to disperse due to the abundance of water and vegetation, making sightings less predictable. However, bird enthusiasts will enjoy the arrival of migratory birds during these months, adding to the park’s vibrant ecosystem.

Things to Do in Tsavo National Park

A wide variety of activities are available in Tsavo National Park, allowing visitors to fully experience the park’s wildlife and stunning scenery.

Explore the park on the morning, evening, or full-day safaris. Spot iconic animals such as lions, elephants, rhinos, and leopards, alongside giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and hippos.

Bird Watching

With over 500 bird species, Tsavo is a paradise for bird lovers. Look for Somali ostriches, martial eagles, golden-breasted starlings, and migratory species during the rainy season.

Mzima Springs

Visit this serene oasis in Tsavo West, fed by underground springs. Crystal-clear waters attract hippos, crocodiles, and colourful fish, visible from underwater viewing points.

Five Sister Hills

One of the most iconic landmarks in Tsavo West, these five identical cone-shaped hills stand close together, forming a stunning landscape that adds to the park’s scenic beauty.

Chaimu Crater

Also known as the "Devil’s Crater", this volcanic cone covered in black lava stones is an exciting place for hikers. Although the climb can be challenging, the panoramic views from the top make it worth the effort.

Roaring Rocks of Tsavo West

Perched near the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, these rocky cliffs offer a stunning viewpoint for spotting lions and diverse wildlife. Named after the roaring winds, they provide a perfect picnic spot with panoramic views of Tsavo West and Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.

Tsavo National Park FAQs
Is Tsavo East National Park better than Tsavo West?

Both parks offer unique experiences. Tsavo East is larger, less travelled, and ideal for wildlife viewing in open savannahs. Tsavo West has rugged terrain, volcanic landscapes, and activities like rock climbing. Both parks are rich in wildlife, so the choice depends on your interests.

Tsavo Lions are unique because male lions in this area lack the typical mane. Known as the “Man-Eaters of Tsavo,” they became famous for attacking railway workers during the 19th century.

Tsavo National Park is located in Kenya, a country renowned for its diverse wildlife and natural beauty. It spans a vast area of southeastern Kenya and is easily accessible from Nairobi or Mombasa.

Tsavo can be reached by road, with a 4–5-hour drive from Nairobi or 2-3 hours from Mombasa. Alternatively, fly to nearby airstrips such as Voi or Taveta and take a short drive to the park.

Tsavo is home to the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhino) along with giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, and over 500 bird species, including migratory birds.

Its vast size, diverse landscapes (savannahs, volcanic formations, and springs), and unique wildlife, like the mane-less Tsavo Lions and red-dusted elephants, make Tsavo a must-visit for any safari enthusiast.
