Zanzibar Tanzania Holidays

ZANZIBAR VISA

Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, is a dream destination for beach lovers and adventure seekers. However, travellers need to be aware of its immigration rules before they arrive.

While Zanzibar follows the same visa policies as mainland Tanzania, all visitors are required to carry their passports for entry and exit checks. Nationals from certain countries can enjoy visa-free access, but most travellers, including those from the U.S., U.K., EU, and Canada, will need to apply for a Tanzania visa or eVisa.

To help you prepare for your Zanzibar Beach Holidays, we’ve detailed everything about Zanzibar Visa types, costs, and how to apply.

Zanzibar Visa Types

Zanzibar offers a range of visa options tailored to meet the diverse needs of travellers. Most visitors, except those from visa-exempt countries, are required to secure a visa before entry. The application process can be completed online via the eVisa platform or upon arrival. Here’s a comprehensive look at the visa types and their purposes:

  • Single Entry Visa (Ordinary Visa)
This is the most common visa type for visitors to Zanzibar. It is valid for up to 90 days and is ideal for purposes such as leisure, family visits, holidays, humanitarian activities, health-related travel, and participation in events like conferences. It is the go-to option for most tourists planning to explore Zanzibar’s beauty.
  • Multiple Entry Visa
Designed for travellers needing to visit Zanzibar frequently, this visa is valid for one year. Common users include business directors, government consultants, spouses of Tanzanian residents, and representatives of international organizations. Holders must leave Zanzibar at least once every three months, making it suitable for ongoing commitments in the region.
  • Business Visa
This visa is issued for short-term business-related activities, professional assignments, or special projects recognized under Tanzanian law. It is valid for 90 days and is commonly used by professionals attending to temporary work engagements in Zanzibar.
  • Transit Visa
Intended for travellers passing through Zanzibar or Tanzania on their way to another destination, the Transit Visa is valid for a maximum of 7 days. It is not suitable for tourism activities and is strictly for brief stopovers.
  • Student Visa
Aimed at foreign nationals pursuing academic activities in Zanzibar, this visa covers internships, volunteer programs, exchange studies, and research. It is issued for durations of up to 2 years, depending on the nature of the academic engagement.
  • Gratis Visa
Issued free of charge, the Gratis Visa is reserved for diplomats and individuals holding official or travel documents from recognized international organizations. Dependents accompanying these individuals are also eligible. The visa type (single or multiple entry) is determined by the immigration authority.
  • Referral Visa
Certain nationalities must apply for a Referral Visa, which requires special clearance from the Zanzibar or Tanzanian immigration offices. Applications for this visa must be submitted at least two months before travel to allow for processing.

This category applies to travellers from specific countries, refugees, and stateless individuals holding Vienna Convention documents. Refer to the list of countries that require a Referral Visa.

Important Notes

Visa Exemptions: Some nationalities do not require a visa to enter Zanzibar. These individuals enjoy visa-free travel as part of agreements between their home countries and Tanzania. The detailed list is here.

eVisa and On-Arrival Visa: While many visitors can apply online for an eVisa, those eligible for on-arrival visas can complete the process at Zanzibar Airport or ferry terminals.

Travel Preparations: Ensure you carry essential documents like your passport, visa (if applicable), and yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re arriving from a high-risk country. Also, make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months after the end of your stay

With a clear understanding of these visa options and requirements, you can choose the one that best fits your travel plans to Zanzibar.
